2021 City Tournament: Mixed Doubles Rules and Registration Information
Matches will be played at Pioneer High School
AGE & RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: Except for the Open division, BOTH players in the Mixed Doubles divisions must be at least 18 by the end of the calendar year.
In the Parent-Child Special Event, the child must be at least entering 6th grade and no older than 17. The “parent” can be any adult over 18 (does not have to be a biological
parent). Parent-Child Special Event teams can be same or mixed genders.
If it is necessary to limit the number of participating teams, then priority shall be given to Washtenaw County residents.
ENTRY FEES: Tournament fees are nonrefundable.
Mixed Doubles: $35 per player. Players will receive a T-shirt. Trophies will be awarded to the finalists in each Mixed Doubles division.
Parent-Child Special Event: $17.50 per player.
LEVELS OF PLAY: The Mixed Doubles tournament is divided into divisions according to USTA (NTRP) ratings and age. The Tournament Committee requires USTA ratings for USTA players and requires self-rating for others and intends to obtain other similar
information regarding non-USTA rated players and reserves the right to move players to a more appropriate division.
Misrepresentation of level of play may result in disqualification. Details of criteria for each level are provided here. Doubles events use combined ratings of both participants, rounded up. For example, 3.5 and 4.0 = 8.0.
Mixed Doubles divisions: 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0, Open, and Senior 50+ (both players on each mixed doubles team must be at least 50 by December 31, 2021). Players can play in the Senior 50+ division regardless of rating.
Parent-Child Special Event: The Tournament Committee will group teams into similar levels as best as we can with the information available. Match play will be a non-elimination format.
By clicking on the registration links below, I acknowledge that I have read and agree to the above rules.
Registration has closed.
FORMAT: Matches in the 9.0 and Open divisions will be best 2 of 3 sets. A 10-minute break is allowed between the 2nd and 3rd sets.
All other Mixed Doubles divisions will use a Match Tiebreak (first to 10 by 2) instead of a third set. There is a 2-minute break between the 2nd set and Match Tiebreak.
In all Mixed Doubles divisions, at 6-6, a Set Tiebreak (first to 7 by 2) will be used. All tiebreaks (both Set and Match Tiebreaks) will use the Coman (USTA league) format.
The Parent-Child Special Event is a one-day showdown on Sunday, June 13. All matches will be 8-game pro-sets with a Set Tiebreak at 7-7 in a compass draw or round-robin format (depending on number of entries). Adults may compete in both the Parent-Child Special Event and one Mixed Doubles event (but if you make it to the latter rounds of the Mixed Doubles tournament, be prepared to play a lot of tennis). This event is designed to be a fun, non-elimination event; no trophies will be awarded.
TENNIS BALLS: A new can of USTA-approved balls will be provided by the tournament for each match.
DRAWS: Draws will be available from a link on AAACTA's website at least 24 hours before the start of play. Players are responsible for checking the draws for their match start times. Events with an insufficient number of entries may be cancelled or combined with other events at the discretion of the Tournament Committee. Players will be notified in advance if this is done. Large draws may require first round matches in the Mixed Doubles divisions to be played on weeknights, with every effort to avoid conflicts with USTA schedules.
MATCH SCHEDULING: All players should report to their tournament site on the designated play date 15 minutes before the start time unless the tournament website says otherwise. DEFAULT TIME IS 10 MINUTES AFTER THE START TIME (when a court is available). Warm-up is limited to 10 minutes. Mixed doubles players should be prepared to play two matches a day. Mixed doubles matches scheduled for weekdays will start no earlier than 6:00pm. Parent-Child Special Event participants are expected to play through a four-hour time block with breaks between matches.
RAIN POLICY: All players should report to the tournament site on the designated play date 15 minutes before the start time RAIN or SHINE, unless the Tournament Director notifies you otherwise. We reserve the right to cancel in case of rain. The Tournament Director will determine whether to delay, reschedule, cancel, or move matches to an indoor court. All participants will be responsible for court fees for matches moved indoors. However, the cost of any final matches that are moved indoors will be paid by AAACTA.
PLAYER AND SPECTATOR GUIDELINES: As a community tournament, camaraderie and fair play are our first priority. If players require assistance regarding rules during the match, they should raise their racquets and wait for assistance from a tournament
official. Coaching is not allowed at any time.
COVID POLICY: If you are not feeling well, please withdraw from the event. If you are a spectator and not feeling well, please stay home. Social distancing and face masks will be strongly encouraged except during a participant’s time on the court, subject to
Michigan and CDC guidelines. There will be no handshakes at the conclusion of matches, instead we will use the racket tap.
COVID WAIVER: I acknowledge the contagious nature of COVID-19 and voluntarily assume the risk that I may be exposed to or infected by COVID-19 by attending this event and that such exposure or infection may result in personal injury, illness, permanent disability, and death. I voluntarily agree to assume all of the foregoing risks and accept sole responsibility for any injury to myself (including, but not limited to, personal injury, disability, and death), illness, damage, loss, claim, liability, or expense, of any kind, that I may experience or incur in connection with my attendance at this event.

QUESTIONS: If you have questions prior to the tournament, please email Tournament Director Shreya Bahl at shreya.bahl139@gmail.com.
To register your Mixed or Parent-Child team, one partner or the parent should complete the registration first. The system will send a confirmation email with a link to register the other partner. Once the first partner is registered, you (the second partner) will be able to select them as your partner during the registration process and the system will create the team. Note: only the second partner has to select their partner's name during registration, the first partner does not.
